Shiatsu and Tuina Massage
Shiatsu and Tuina are holistic styles of massage based on the ancient
principles and philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
TCM views the human body quite differently to Western
Medicine. The Chinese cosmology developed from observations
of nature and natural systems; one commonly used TCM 'health model'
compares the body to a garden. We all know that a garden
requires a stable environment; a balance of nutrients, sun and water to
grow and be healthy. In the same way, the human body requires
a balance of energy (known as 'Qi' in TCM) to exist at its full
potential. Both Shiatsu and Tuina aim to bring equilibrium to
the body; on a physical, emotional and mental level.
Shiatsu
is a manual pressure point theapy which originated in Japan.
It is traditionally practised on a floor mat or futon but may
also be adapted to a table. It is performed fully clothed,
with generally no use of massage oil. The word Shiatsu
translates as 'finger pressure', which is a fair desciption of the
technique.
Tuina
is the ancient form of Chinese Remedial Massage and has a history of at
least 2000 years. It is practiced in many hospitals in China
and is considered to be a very prestigious occupation. Tuina
is traditionally practiced on a massage table and may be performed
fully clothed or with oil. The techniques used in Tuina
generally focus on acupressure points and aim to bring balance within
the body. This style is very beneficial for musculo-skeletal
disorders but is also able to ease the symptoms of various internal
imbalances.
Shiatsu and Tuina are excellent in the treatment of headaches,
sciatica, stress, back pain, sports or overuse-related conditions.
Both techniques are also great for overall health and
prevention of disease and are an excellent way to relieve tension.
